Press release
The former Council owned site on Milton Road – comprising of a ground floor library and seven apartments – is currently on the market for sale.
The site was acquired by This Land when Cambridgeshire County Council (CCC) created the business as its arms length housing delivery provider.
There are concerns the disposal of the library will in some way undermine the delivery of services. This is unfounded. CCC has a 25 year lease, running from 2019, which the landlord (owner) cannot terminate. The lease falls within the Landlord and Tenant Act, (leasehold agreements are protected under statute), providing security of tenure for the leaseholder, CCC. In addition, the lease can be extended for a further 15 years, by the tenant, at the end of the 25-year term, providing security of tenure until 2059.
Therefore the operational needs of the library are protected. This also includes the community area within that space.
This Land’s focus is on the design and construction of new homes to meet the needs of the growing communities across Cambridgeshire and the surrounding counties. As a developed site, Milton Road is being sold by This Land as part of its on going strategy to purchase and develop new sites. Any disposal by This Land will not undermine the delivery of library services.
